S.L.H. P.D. E.M.T.’S (EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIANS)
The Spring Lake Heights Police Department currently has seven Officers who are also E.M.T.’s (Emergency Medical Technicians). All police officers are trained in basic first aid as part of their police academy training however E.M.T. training requires an additional 190 hours of specialized training as well as 10 hours of practical “hands on” experience in a hospital emergency department. E.M.T.’s are trained in practical emergency medical knowledge and skills that can be deployed within a rapid time frame. Because the Spring Lake Heights Department operates 24 hours a day, 7 days per week, 365 days per year our police officer E.M.T.’s will be on scene and begin assessment and treatment before the first aid squad arrives. Our goal is early intervention to rapidly evaluate a patient’s condition and to maintain a patient’s airway, breathing and circulation by C.P.R. and defibrillation, if needed. In addition, E.M.T. intervention aims to control external bleeding, prevent shock, and prevent further injury or disability by immobilizing potential spinal or other bone fractures until the arrival of local first aid or paramedics.
Every 3 years E.M.T.’s must obtain 24 Core C.E.U. (Continuing Education Unit) hours which are comprised of 8 C.E.U. hours in “Module A”, Airways, “Module B”, Medical Emergencies and “Module C”, Trauma. In addition to the 24 Core C.E.U.’s, E.M.T.’s must also earn 24 Elective C.E.U. hours.
